Said the hag: "How would you like to stay here with me, for I want a maid?"

"What will I have to do?" says she.

"You'll have to wash me and dress me, and sweep the hearth clean; and on the peril of your life never look up the chimney," said the hag.She struck the goat with a stone and continued on her way. Finally, she came to the lime-kiln, which asked to be cleaned. Disregarding its plea, she hurried past. Next, she encountered a cow that requested to be milked after seven years of neglect. Ignoring the cow's plea, she pushed on.

Eventually, she reached a mill that begged to be turned as it had not been turned in seven years. Disregarding the mill's request, she went inside and laid down behind the mill door with the bag of gold and silver under her head, ready to rest for the night.

When the hag returned to find the girl missing, she became enraged and set off in pursuit. Along the way, she encountered the horse, the sheep, the goat, the lime-kiln, the cow, and finally, the mill, asking each if they had seen the girl with her stolen bag of riches. Each time, the creatures replied that it had not been long since they had seen her pass by.

The hag followed the trail, questioning each encounter, until she reached the mill, which revealed the girl's hiding place behind the door. The hag transformed the girl into a stone with a white rod and reclaimed the bag of gold and silver. She then returned home with her ill-gotten treasure.

In another part of the land, the youngest daughter of the family decided to seek her fortune after her sisters' prolonged absence. Her mother blessed her with half a bannock, and she set out on her journey.

She traveled far and wide until she came upon a house occupied by an old hag who offered her shelter in exchange for household chores. The hag instructed her to wash and dress her, sweep the hearth, but warned her never to look up the chimney.

The young girl agreed to the tasks and carried them out diligently. One day, while sweeping the hearth, she glanced up the chimney and spotted her mother's long leather bag of gold and silver. Without hesitation, she took the bag and fled towards home as fast as her legs could carry her. 

Along the way, she encountered various creatures in need of assistance, including a horse, a sheep, a goat, a lime-kiln, a cow, and a mill, whom she helped before seeking
