Bir. May Heaven restore that peace thy bosom wants!

Elw. [kneels.] Look down, thou, awful, heart-inspecting Judge,

Dou. Yield, villain, yield!

Per. Not till this good right arm

Dou. This to thy heart, then.

Per. Defend thy own.

Dou. Confusion, death, and hell!

Edr. [without] This way I heard the noise.

Per. Cursed treachery!

Dou. Seize on him.

Per. I'm taken in the toils.

Dou. In the cursed snare

Elw. He never sought thy life.

Dou. Adulteress, peace!

Per. Douglas, I'm in thy power; but do not triumph,

Elw. [to Douglas] O do not, do not, kill him!

Per. Madam, forbear;

Dou. Sorceress, I'll disappoint thee—he shall die,

Elw. Savage tyrant!

Per. She knew not of my coming;—I alone
