Virginia: A Tragedy, and Other Poems
BEATRICE TRIUMPHANT.

BEATRICE TRIUMPHANT.

(To Beatrice Cenci, as she is depicted in Guido Reni's painting of St. Michael and the Dragon.)

Crowning, like light, a maiden, martyred head,

And mighty wings in victory outspread.

What wondrous resurrection from the dead!

Who, cruel craven, caused thee to be slain;

A captive and in undeservéd pain,

Forever rendered loathsome by that stain!

With woman's face and angel's stature, thou

Tell me, why wakes no awful vengeance now

Unfold the mystery of that calm brow!

THE CALL OF THE IRISH SEA.

THE CALL OF THE IRISH SEA.

[69]

THE LION OF LUCERNE.

THE LION OF LUCERNE.

Where Mother Nature sings low lullabies,

Beneath the light of deep and tender skies,

In his lone agony the Lion lies.
